Anna is a young orphan living in Constantinople before the Ottoman siege Omeir is a Bulgarian boy born with a cleft lip who is enlisted into the Ottoman troops. The book begins by introducing the five main characters and Aethon’s story, as fictitiously discovered by the real-life Greek philosopher Diogenes. These chapters jump from character to character, switching perspectives throughout. ![]() The 24 folios of Aethon’s story introduce each chapter. All the plots are connected through the Cloud Cuckoo Land folios, a fictitious Ancient Greek story that follows Aethon as he endeavors to find a utopia known as Cloud Cuckoo Land. The characters are: Anna and Omeir in and around 15th-century Constantinople Zeno and Seymour whose plots converge in 2020 and Konstance, who lives in the future. I really liked both characters but I particularly enjoyed seeing the story unfold from Alba's point of view. In the process he discovers a huge secret about his own past which changes his entire outlook and his future. ![]() Seven is a poor teenager living in the South, who is caught trying to steal a memory by Alba, the daughter of one of London's most prominent criminal prosecutors. It's such an incredible idea but Ngan makes you believe that there might come a day when it would be possible. I loved the idea of being able to relive your own memories, or experience other peoples' through their eyes. ![]() They are even sometimes stolen by criminal gangs, which is where one of the main characters Seven features. These are then either kept or traded as valuable commodities. Set in the future, it imagines a world in which people are able to store their memories. I thought the concept for the novel was brilliant. While I didn't enjoy this one quite as much, it was still a pretty good read.
